For the third year in a row, I am pleased to say that I have been commissioned to produce work for Black Lives Matter (Toronto)'s Freedom School.
However, this year I was asked to do something very different. The school is putting on a play about Africville; and I was commissioned to make the backdrop.
At 8 x 10 feet, the scale of the work was not familiar to me; nevertheless, as I spoke with their representative, I could see the piece immediately, so just had to create it!
Although the story of Africville is a sad one, and shameful blot on Canada's history; when I picture Africville, I see colourful houses on the hill sloping down to the ocean, and bright blue skies, all seen through a screen of flowers.
I am looking forward to seeing the piece in action with children acting in front of it; but in the meantime, you'll find a picture of the piece in my gallery.
